We all know San Juan Island has great beaches, book stores and places to eat, but when was the last time you included a hike in your trip? Next time you’re visiting, give this short hike a try. The trail isn’t long, but it does go, up, up, up! You’ll find it’s a good, short workout and you and your family can do anything for .8 miles though, right?!
Young Hill Trail is a 1.6 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Friday Harbor, with a 605ft. elevation gain. It features beautiful wild flowers, an English Camp cemetery, the final resting spot for six Royal Marines and one British civilian and incredible views at the top.
As you climb, you’ll come to a place where the trail forks to the right. Take this short detour and check out the old Engligh Camp Cemetery.
Reaching the top, you’ll enjoy views west over Garrison, Mitchell, and Westcott bays and out over finger coves and narrow straits to Victoria and the Gulf Islands. This hike is perfect when you’re short on time, but looking for incredible views.
“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity”
― John Muir
